Lockdown Looks
Quarantina has been weird for all of us in different ways. Figuring out new ways of life, new hobbies, work from home life, unemployment life, exploring strength in being alone, and exploring new ways to connect with others virtually. Through the growing pains, I believe we’ll all come out stronger in the end, but that’s doesn’t negate how incredibly challenging it’s been at times.
Through all of this, it’s made me grateful for what I do have. And has made me appreciate ways to explore my creativity in lockdown. One of which is through style. No matter if I’m walking from my bedroom to the living room, it has been incredibly helpful to change clothes and look into my closet and wear something that brings me joy. That is what a lot of these lockdown looks for my chi.
Not only do I feel good wearing them and how they look, but I also feel good about where they came from. We are running out of natural resources to make clothes, and in 2013 the fashion industry produced 80 billion garments in ONE YEAR! Nutso. Places like Cambodia only have to pay the workers one-sixth of the hourly rate that you do in China. We are using 60% more clothing with half the time of ownership which is putting us in a rough spot of overconsumption as a country.1 All of these facts and so many more are some of the reasons it’s important to me to think about where my clothes came from. Which makes spending that extra time for the thrill of the hunt at a thrift store or a transparent business that much more satisfying.
